First Impression
My first visit to my internship site actually was not my first time being at Stocks Elementary School. I am actually a former student of the school, although, it has gone through some renovations. I have also entered the school in a parent role as well. As you enter the school, you step into a large lobby with halls that are painted with scenes of historical sites of Tarboro. These landmarks are often used to capture our town. It gives you a feeling of community. There are also a couple of bulletin boards. One of the boards is the PTO board, requesting volunteers and listing officers and dates. Any parent that walks in will know that the school welcomes volunteers and parental support. When I entered the front office, the secretary, office manager and data manager greeted me. They were all very friendly, and ready to assist in anyway. As I looked around the office, I spotted children books on the end tables and a rack of brochures for parents on everything from how to assist their child in preparing for testing to how to get assistance needed. Also hanging on the front counter is a map of parks in our area, promoting families to get involved in the community. It is obvious that this is a child-centered school. If you go past the office, you will find many small flower, vegetable and rock gardens located throughout the property. You will also find walls decorated with student work. The teachers, staff, administration, and students take much pride in their school and work hard to keep it clean and inviting.Facilities
Overall, the utilization of the facilities is satisfactory. The principal worked hard this summer to reorganize some of the halls due to the loose of some portable classrooms, as well as a loose in students and staff positions due to the opening of a new charter school in our area. On average, most classes have 20 students per a class. All kindergarten teachers have their own assigned assistant and the other grades share two to three assistants per grade. Assistants are rotated to help supervise Behavior Academy is there is a student assigned that day. The pre-K program and day care rooms had to be moved from portable classrooms to inside the building. A lot of thought went into reorganizing the location of classrooms. All grades, for the most part ,are now grouped together on like hallways. The principal was strategic in putting the third grade students on the front hall, away from the other grades, because they were the oldest group and so that the other classes would not distract them. The low-incident exceptional children class is located in an area that is not secluded from the other classrooms, but in an area that other classes will not be distracted by activities they may do. The cafeteria is at the back of the building, away from other classes. The gym and music class are also assigned here. This is a busy area during the middle of the day, but classes not at lunch are not distracted by it. Also, there is a student bathroom located by the cafeteria. There is actually a bathroom on every hall, and almost every classroom has a bathroom located in it. The library is located at the center of the school so it is accessible to all. There are several playgrounds at the school. Certain playgrounds are designated for certain grade levels. This allows multiple grades to have recess at the same time, but helps to prevent injuries and overcrowding of the equipment. The daycare and Pre-K have their own playground that is developmentally appropriate for them. Kindergarten and first grade share a playground and second and third grade share a playground.There are many areas assigned for staff use. The staff has a mailroom in the main office, a work room, a lounge, a conference room, and there is a resource room that will be used to create and house a data wall for the entire school. These areas allow the staff plenty of resources and spaces to complete tasks and conduct meetings.
Student Population
The following is information of the demographics of the school. The data is based on past year's enrollment. The demographics for the 2012-2013 will be different due to students withdrawing and enrolling into the new charter school in Edgecombe County.Financial
In looking at the budget, I found that a lot of money is utilized for human capita and specialized programs. Our school does qualify for Title I. A large portion of that money is used to hire a resource math/reading teacher and an instructional coach for the school. It is also used to help purchase programs such as Study Island. We also receive money from the district for remediation and intervention, which has help to cover tutors in the past. This year, money from funds were used to assist in buying smart boards for almost all the classrooms. We are also using funding to help purchase programs such as Waterford and Success Maker. Some instructional money in the past has also been used to help purchase teacher classroom supplies. There is no money allocated for professional development, so the school is limited in professional development. The school does try to use district professional development and to think outside of the box to find other ways to get professional development for teachers. The principal has used other funds to help with professional development she deems necessary for successful reading instruction. Stocks has a very active PTO. PTO has assisted in providing funds to purchase school t-shirts, fund field day and other school needs.School Curriculum
Stocks will be implementing Common Core Standards in ELA and Mathematics, and the Essential Standards for science and social studies for all grades. The Pre-K program will be implementing the Creative Curriculum program in their instruction. This past summer, several teachers from Stocks worked with the district to create district pacing guides. Below is a copy of the daily schedules for each grade level and Encore classes. Every grade level as at least 90 minutes of daily guided reading time. During this time, the implement the Daily Five ELA practices. If an Encore teacher has a blank time, they will be used in the regular classroom setting to assist with intervention and remediation. Encore classes include PE, music, library and computer lab. Success Maker, Study Island, Waterford and teacher assigned projects will be used during computer lab days. There is also a lot of time built into the librarian's schedule for open check out time. Currently, there is not a writing curriculum/program in place, however, Stocks is working to create one based on resources available. This will be used in the daily writing block for each grade.Click here to access the pacing guides teachers will follow.
